#ItsOurSocialMedia 2025

With roll backs on content moderation and loosening restrictions on hateful content by social media giants, online spaces are becoming more hostile for LGBTQ+ young people, among many, many others.

This year, our annual campaign to create safe spaces online – It’s Our Social Media – has never been so important.

Social media is not inherently bad. Online platforms are places we can connect, express, learn and explore.

However, these spaces need to be regulated and moderated.

For the campaign this year, given the changes across various social platforms, particularly around moderation – we’re calling for better regulation and redoubling our efforts around equipping young people with the knowledge to prevent the spread of misinformation and disinformation.

Let’s Hold the Platforms Accountable

Social media companies have the power to make online spaces safer and curb misinformation, disinformation and hate. They’re choosing not to, and instead are prioritising profits over the safety and wellbeing of young people.

We’re calling on our politicians to step in. With social media companies demonstrating they won’t do everything in their power to make online spaces safer, we need regulation and legislation.

  1. Require an opt-in option for online recommender systems and algorithms.
  2. Strongly enforce the Digital Services Act by the EU on the protection of minors.

We’re engaging with TDs, Senators and MEPs to ensure that they are doing all they can to work towards making online spaces as safe as possible for us all.

Pause. Question Confirm.

When it comes to misinformation and disinformation, we can play our part too. Verifying information on social media is more essential now than it has ever been. If you’re not sure whether something is accurate, follow the steps ‘Pause. Question. Confirm.’ before liking, commenting or sharing the content.

With tech companies stepping back from their responsibility to fact check and moderate content – we can step in too.

Feeding the Good:

We can play a role in influencing our circles and networks. We can share positive content. Share queer joy. Share more of what we want to see.

Throughout this campaign, we’ll be sharing moments of queer joy and calling for our followers to share theirs. Let’s create an inspiring, positive space on social media. Let’s all #FeedTheGood.

Blocking the Bad:

There are lots of different kinds of content on social media, but not everything we see is true, reliable or kind. We know that social media can have harmful effects on our mental health and even our safety.

The LGBTQ+ community can and is experiencing hate speech and targeted harassment online. Remember that each social media channel has their own reporting function – let’s use it to the greatest extent possible! Let’s all #BlockTheBad.
