What does Lesbian Day of Visibility mean to you?
Lesbian Day of Visibility means representation, celebration and unity within our
community, especially right now while our trans sisters are under such scrutiny and
disdain. To me, it means freedom to hold my partners hand in public, to invite my family
to pride events, and to incorporate the beautiful bubble of the LGBTQI community with
the world outside it – accepting and respecting one another.
Tell us about the piece you’ve created for Lesbian Day of Visibility
The piece I’ve created for for Lesbian Day of Visibility is titled ‘I see my future and it’s
bright’ because for me, there is sometimes a tendency to be wrapped up in the time
warp of our own generation – and seeing older generations survive in their queerness
and thrive in queer love is so moving to me. Our culture has such strong ebbs and flows
of acceptance that to see love that has stood the test of time is really a beautiful thing.
What do you hope LGBTQ+ young people will take from this piece?
I hope it resonates with them the same way its message resonates with me; we all
deserve that happiness that is so rarely represented for queer people.
Do you think art can bring communities together?
I think art brings us together through conversation, through connection. I’ve made friends
online from all over the world by just showing support through a comment, and in real
life, by approaching them and admiring their craft. It builds branches and roots that make
us stronger in our numbers.
How do you use your art to share positive messages of hope?
I don’t really know to be honest – I guess I’m just pretty hopeful. I’ve been incredibly
lucky with a wonderful supportive family and partner, and I draw from what I know. Not
everyone in our community is granted the same luck, and now more than ever in the
face of despair it’s so important to show that we can be hopeful.
