Answer
Thank you for sharing this, it seems that your young person has just come out to you. This is wonderful news that they were ready to tell you. It is likely something that was on their mind for a long time.
At the same time, itt is normal that you feel worried about their future – this is very common for parents of LGBTQ+ young people. If you are not familiar with the LGBTQ+ community, you may worry about your young person’s future, relationships and different things you might have imagined for them.
Luckily, the LGBTQ+ community is a strong thriving community that is very welcoming and accepting. We would recommend tuning into some of the LGBTQ+ shows that are available now. This will give you some insight to the LGBTQ+ community. Most streaming platforms have an LGBTQ+ section, we would suggest ‘Heartstopper’, ‘Dating Amber’ and ‘Handsome Devil’.
In Ireland, same sex couples have the same opportunities as heterosexual couples when it comes to relationships, marriage, health, children or whatever it is your young person decides for their future. It is important for your LGBTQ+ young person to connect to their community. There are LGBTQ+ youth groups across the country which is a great start. You can find more information here.
We have a new resource available that was created in 2024 with the support of LGBTQ+ young people’s parents, you can find this here (link when we have new resource). This guide may be helpful to you.
Thanks,
Jen
